Expertise Update

Issue 10 - January/February 2007

Welcome to 2007
Staff updates
A warm welcome is extended to John Reinders who joins MJ as a Junior Assistant Lighting Designer. John attended the Tshwane University of Technology, freelanced for some years and also worked for MGG.
At last MJ’s faithful bachelor and LD, Francois van der Merwe, has found true love and someone willing to put up with the crazy hours this industry demands. Congratulations to Francois and Charmaine Roux on their engagement. We trust that you will enjoy a lifetime of happiness.
The first page of the calendar has already been pulled off and it seems that 2007 is not waiting for anyone. It is obviously going to be a fast and exciting year and we would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone in the industry success and joy. To our staff, many thanks for all your hard work and dedication in the year that has passed - We really do appreciate you.

Events this year are going to combine a passionate team from MJ with exciting products. It will be our delight to offer you brand new concepts and ideas to make your next gig one worth remembering.
Television at it's brightest
"Are you a couple of notes short of a melody?"
"Are you a few sandwiches
short of a picnic?"
These are lines we've become accustomed to hearing on SABC's popular television game show, The Weakest Link. Fiery presenter, Fiona Coyne, has a way of making contestants sweat under the collar, and they're not the only ones sweating! From a lighting point of view, LD Francois van der Merwe has to keep up with the fast pace of the show especially with the quick rounds - which means concentration the entire time.

The game show first appeared in the UK on 14 th August 2000, with the 100th South African show just recorded -this is now the fifth season of the local Weakest Link. When it came to SA, Francois had the enormous task of getting the specified lighting design on par with the international production. He achieved this using 13 x Studio Spots, 11 x MAC 2000s, 6 x Studio Colors, 14 x Source 4s, 9 x 1kw Pups and 2 x 5kw Soft Lights.

While contestants on The Weakest Link are willing to sacrifice bruised egos for the chance of winning a lump sum, Francois never takes any chances.
Latest and Greatest Robe Gear
Making events larger than life is what we enjoy most when given the opportunity. MJ's latest products from Robe will add a fantastic twist to creativity, providing the audience with something new, fresh and something they haven't seen before.

DigitalSpot 5000DT

Can you picture in your mind a projector and the image you see on the screen? Well the new Robe DigitalSpot 5000DT is a light but also a projector – the first of its kind in Africa . It is going to give events a fresh new look, it's daring, its abilities are endless and the audience will love it!

This intelligent unit is an automated moving head but it does not only project like a light. It is able to project live video or graphics, and it is also able to manipulate the images seen.

MediaSpinner 50AT

If you think of the MediaSpinner as just a tool to rotate promotional logos, then think again! The only limit here is your imagination!

Attach any stage set piece or décor weighing up to 50kg to the MediaSpinner, which can either be mounted on trussing or stand-alone on the ground, and you start realizing its capabilities.

A smoke machine could be attached, as an example, and you’ll have smoke rotating around a room. Put a speaker on the unit, and listen as sound travels around a room. Can you imagine a moving ACL bar to create a stir!
