Concert of hope
The 2004 Backstage Aids Benefit Concert was so well received, that a second production was held on April 22 at the Standard Bank Arena to once again raise funds and to create awareness for this cause. While the entire cast from Backstage, e-tv’s prime-time show, put in their overtime with concert rehearsals, MJ’s Francois van der Merwe worked closely with Mauritz Neethling, e-tv’s lighting director, to ensure a lighting spectacular that would not disappoint. Mauritz began technical planning two months ahead, and the actual pre-programming commenced a few short weeks before the event, utilizing the Offline Programming studio at the MJ premises.   At least half of the show was pre-programmed, which meant that Francois could arrive on the set, disc in hand with most of his work done. The final programming had to be done at the venue as certain artists were unable to provide the necessary backtracks in advance. As the concert was a live broadcast, the correct synergy had to exist between the television and “rock ‘n roll” lighting. Due to the bright television lights that are vital to capture the faces of people on stage, the intelligent lighting has to be less theatrical, yet effective enough to bring in the necessary colour and energy.

Goodbye Billy
To friends and family it was heartbreaking news to hear that the life of Billy Clarkson, owner of AV Worx, had tragically come to an end just before the Easter weekend. Billy was known for his master angling skills and professionalism in the workplace,
but most importantly for being a loving father to his daughter Jenna and a dear friend to all at MJ. We are deeply saddened at this time and would like to extend our sincere condolences to Billy’s relatives and all who knew him. He will not be forgotten.

Hydropower and Sustainable
Development Gala
The Hydropower and Sustainable Development 2006 Gala dinner took place at the SCC Pavilion and was coordinated by Go Girl Events. The function was opened with a key note by South Africa’s Deputy President Ms Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka. The entertainment was a collaboration of some of our country’s best commercial and traditional performers.

Offline Programming Studio Demos at MJ

With demos on the hour, every hour, MJ were delighted to show off Maxedia and the latest member to their family, a new Offline Programming Studio. A live lighting show was held in the workshop where the power of Maxedia was displayed. The Maxedia Digital Media Composer by Martin Professional is a media server capable of handling a multitude of digital media, images, video, 3D graphics and more. It enables the lighting designer to have full control of both the lighting and video elements of a show. The lighting extravaganza was followed by a tour of the Offline Programming Studio which is run by the Martin Show Designer (MSD) Gold Software Package. This studio allows lighting designers to pre-program their shows before the actual event, and the special effects from Maxedia can also be incorporated here. Realistic 3D lighting simulations were projected onto a large screen in the studio for the guests to see the effectiveness of MSD. They were also shown how computer generated drawings in 2D or 3D format could be created.

While Maxxyz was the lighting desk used for the demo, it must be said that lighting designers are welcome to use the studio utilizing their console of choice. The response for the three day demonstrations was favourable. “Everyone loved it,” commented Francois van der Merwe from MJ. “They all realised that this will be a huge time and cost saver.”
The next demos are planned to be held in July.
